Camphorlaurel
by
Pauline Nolan

Great textured trunk
In dappled light
The gentle pools of sun
Playing on its skin
I climbed, awkardly at first
Then with more ease
To sit in the crook of its branches
Looking down seemed a long long way
Only a child at that time
And Sox, our cat decided to join me
Stretched in feline bliss
On top of a large round branch
In my little world
Hidden and protected I breathed
If you crushed the leaves in your hand
The pungent air wafted up to tickle your nose
Camphor, that reminded me of the steam bowls
The ones that mum would make us sniff when we were sick
Hidden under a towels with plumes of steam curling upwards
In my little world all was wonder and peace
Sox stretched out a paw with claws unveiled
Not to hunt this time, but simply to rearrange
His languid body into the oh so perfect pose
For resting
Patting Sox, I clambered down
This would always be my tree and still it stands today
Exactly where I left it
